Afghanistan is a far distance away from Lance Corporal (LCpl) Danny Solis’ home town of Jamaica, Queens, New York. It’s also a far distance from his new home in San Diego, CA, where on August 2, 2011, Furnishing Hope installed a living room, bedroom, kitchen and bathroom, much of it donated from Living Spaces furniture. Other costs were generously covered by BECCA swimwear. Furnishing Hope creates a healing environment for wounded warriors, relieving anxiety for families in crisis.
LCpl Solis’ left leg was wounded during dangerous combat operations, and knows he has a “long recovery ahead.” Solis is very protective of his injury, always ensuring it stays clean, just as his doctor ordered. “I’m going to fight to keep my leg,” said a determined Solis, in an effort to prevent potential amputation of his injured leg. Despite loss of two, out of the three, arteries in his leg, Solis is going to take the utmost care of his wound.
The United States Marine Corps deployed Solis’ Regiment in 2011. When Paige Solis, LCpl Solis’ wife of one year, received a call from Solis regarding his injury and return to the U.S., she was in shock from the event. “I was upset and terrified,” Paige explained. “I was so happy he [is] alive.”
Furnishing Hope’s installation of furniture relieved some stress from the Solis family. “Moving all this in brought a huge weight off our shoulders,” Paige remarked. “We were not expecting this level of assistance. Coming back to a place we can call home is a relief. We were living in a hotel for a while, which is not the easiest with his injury.”
The Solis family watched as the Furnishing Hope team brought in a new bed, a couch, rocker/recliner and other furniture. “This is going to be perfect. I’m so excited, I feel like dancing!”, Paige exclaimed. LCpl Solis shared, “This [furniture] will help me with my recovery; it makes me feel like a human again. We’re very grateful for everyone that is helping us.” Solis continued, “While I’m getting better every day, having to not worry about the cost, and the logistics of getting furniture is a huge break. Thank you.”
At the end of the installation, nothing made the Furnishing Hope team happier than to hear, “This is awesome!” from Paige. Paige liked the items picked out by the professional designers that work with Furnishing Hope, making this installation an effective one.
